Oh What Do You Do When the Lights Go Out?

Last Wednesday night, just before bedtime, we were involved our little routine of getting ready for our long evening nap when suddenly the we heard the sound of a torrential downpour outside accompanied with tornado like winds. As we all rushed to look outside the lights went out. After quieting the screams and finding a flashlight for everyone, Haley so nicely informed me that we needed to light all the candles in the house so that we could see and then proceeded to walk me around showing me the ones I needed to light. Shortly after this, Jeff and I were checking on neighbors and the yard to make sure everything was alright when we heard this little conversation going on between Megan and Haley:

Haley: "Come on Megan lets go check Mommy's room."
Megan: "Nope this one doesn't work either."
Haley: "Okay, then lets check our bedroom."
Megan: "Nope, it looks like all of the lights are burned out. Mom, do you think the lights in the car still work?"

Isn't it funny how they think? Those two walked around checking every light switch in the house to see if it would work and then they were concerned that the lights in the car would work just in case we had to leave to stay somewhere else.

After 5 minutes of no lights we thought we would put everyone to bed, but the girls freaked out because their night light wouldn't work (heaven forbid we go to bed in the dark). So instead we decided to read more books - although Paige reminded us that we had already read that night - Megan, Haley and Nathan got a kick out of reading books with a flashlight. Paige decided that it would be way more fun to play her Leapster, and Megan was excited that the leapsters still worked even with the power out!

Power was finally restored 25 minutes later and the children were having so much fun reading with daddy and the flashlights that it took about 2 minutes before they realized that the lights were back on. Oh what simple pleasures and a peaceful night it was after all.

Very cute. I still get freaked out when the power goes off in the night. I don't know why, but it is not my favorite thing. The pictures make you all look so tan. Oh I miss the sun!!!
